Biography
Born in Yateley, Hampshire, Mark is a singer/songwriter with many influences. At 7 years old he started taking keyboard lessons with the Yamaha music school after his parents received a voucher for 2 free lessons. Over the years and during secondary school he grew ever more curious of the inner workings of music heard on the stereo at home; artists such as Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler, R.E.M, Dodgy, Travis, Crowded House, Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones. The obvious guitar roots of these bands and artists lead to his purchasing of an acoustic guitar age 13, and he taught himself to play it using what he had learned from the keyboard as a grounding.
Throughout the following year he learned from and played with other guitar players and musicians in school, being introduced to several blues artists, the likes of Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King and classic rock acts such as AC/DC, Guns 'N' Roses, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Queen. Following the purchase of an electric guitar and with the GCSE years looming, his passion for music lead to the ultimate decision that it was more than a hobby and he decided to apply to study the guitar further at the Academy of Contemporary Music, Guildford.
From 16 he spent 2 years at the college, exposing him to all forms of music. Drawn more to the emotional characteristics of music than the pursuit of technical virtuosity, a path chosen by a large majority of studying musicians, his view towards music was dramatically altered by the realisation of songwriting quality across all genres from Motown to Pop and Rock, artists such as Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Bryan Adams and Elton John, to name very few.
Towards the end of his time at the college, Mark was introduced to a string of modern artists and bands from the American market such as Dave Matthews Band, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Steely Dan; musicians who demonstrated in-depth songwriting ability while maintaining the hook creation necessary for mainstream success. This inspired Mark's ultimate decision to try for a songwriting career, and since leaving college he has been writing, recording and performing his own material alongside working professionally with other bands and artists. He has played live on BBC radio and at many venues across London such as The Bedford, Soho Revue, The Live Lounge and the Cobden Club.
